Raising a kid can be a challenge. Everyone has their opinions and when you’re a parent, especially a single parent, everyone thinks they know more than you do. The advise flows freely whether you want it or not. Strong and Kind and Other Important Character Traits Your Child Needs to Succeed by Willie Robertson is unlike other parenting books I’ve read. Instead of coaching me on how I need to be sensitive and politically correct while raising my child it touches on the key traits a child needs to learn to succeed in the world.
Look around at our twenty somethings. Many of them have a hard time functioning in the world because these traits weren’t a focus. We were more focus on everyone’s a winner mentality in the 80s and 90s. And that’s just not how the real world works. Willie Robertson believe the traits we need to focus on are; strong, kind, self-control, honesty, compassion, patience, joyfulness, loyalty and humility. I couldn’t agree more. A child with these traits is going to go much farther in life.
But Willie also believe the parent needs to teach these by modeling the traits themselves. Kids do what they see and if they see mom or dad behaving in a certain way they will do it too. I can attest to that first hand. My daughter mimics me perfectly when it comes to these traits. I’m a fairly patient person and I can see her starting to develop her patience and deal with things in a similar manner as I do. Kindness is a trait I am constantly trying to instill in my child. I try to show her how we are kind to animals and our friends. Compassion I try to teach her all year round but especially around the holidays when there are volunteer opportunities or toys for tots I really try to emphasize it then. I really feel kindness and compassion go hand and hand.
If you are looking for a wonderful book that helps put things in perspective and inspires you to raise a well rounded child with these character traits then this is the book for you. It’s very well written and is an enjoyable read. And even if you don’t have kids you will be able to take away some value to implement in your every day life too.
I hope I have peaked your interest because I’m giving away a copy of the book! That’s right they gave me a copy to give away to one lucky reader. So enter below.
