I love loading up the car and going on road trips with Peyton. But what I don’t love is that she will bury her face in her iPad or the portable DVD player without looking up or around her for hours on end. So instead, I limit the time she can be on her electronic and we play fun family games while we are driving down the road. Here are a few of the games we enjoy playing when in the car.
I Spy
This is a classic and one of Peyton’s favorites to play. One of us will say “I spy, with my little eye, something ……..” Then the other one has to guess what it is. The tricky part about playing it in a car is that the person guessing needs to be paying attention because what you say you spy could not be around for long.
License Plate Game
If we are going on a longer road trip this one works best. We take a piece of paper and write down all 50 states in alphabetical order. Then as we see a license plate from each state we mark it off. The goal is to find all 50 states before the end of the trip! Peyton has been known to walk through parking lots when we stop for lunch to see if she can find any new states that we have not been able to find while on the road. We have yet to find all 50 in one trip.
The Quiet Game
This is for those of you that have more than 1 child with you on a road trip. Heck, I sometimes play this with Peyton because she talks a lot and sometimes this momma just needs a little quiet. The game is simple, everyone needs to be quiet, the first one to speak loses. It’s a great one to play if the kids need a break from each other or if you just need some silence for a while.
Car Bingo
This one is fun to play if you have a few people with you. There are actually bingo cards made up for this game that you can purchase online or you can make your own up before you head out. If you make your own you are going to want to have squares filled with things you may see on a road trip. Instead of having someone call out numbers the players must pay attention to what is around them and see if they can find it on their card. The first one to fill up a line, just like in traditional BINGO, wins!
