Disney Twisted Tales: The Complete Reading Order and Why Teens Love These Magical Retellings

If you’ve ever watched a Disney movie and wondered, “What would have happened if one thing had gone differently?” then the Disney Twisted Tales series is for you.

Published by Disney-Hyperion, the Twisted Tales books take beloved Disney classics and turn them upside down. Each novel asks a fascinating “what if” question that changes the entire story. The result is a collection of young adult fantasy novels filled with adventure, romance, mystery, and plenty of unexpected twists.

These books have become incredibly popular with middle school and high school readers because they take familiar stories and make them feel brand new. Readers get to revisit favorite characters while discovering alternate timelines, darker storylines, and deeper character development than the movies could provide.

What Age Group Are Disney Twisted Tales Best For?

Most Disney Twisted Tales are best suited for readers ages 12 and older. While they still contain the Disney magic fans love, they often include more complex themes, higher stakes, and darker situations than the original animated films.

These books are perfect for:

  • Middle school readers looking for longer chapter books
  • High school students who enjoy fantasy and fairy tales
  • Disney fans of any age
  • Reluctant readers who like familiar characters
  • Readers who enjoy series such as The Lunar Chronicles, Caraval, or The Selection

One of the best things about the series is that each book can generally be read on its own, so readers can start with their favorite Disney movie and work from there.

1. A Whole New World (Aladdin)

What if Aladdin had never found the magic lamp?

In this reimagining of Aladdin, Jafar reaches the Cave of Wonders before Aladdin ever gets the chance. With the lamp in his possession, Jafar quickly becomes one of the most powerful villains Disney has ever created. Agrabah falls under his control, and the kingdom begins to suffer under his rule.

Without magical wishes to help him, Aladdin must rely on his intelligence, courage, and determination. Jasmine also plays a much larger role than she did in the movie, becoming an active leader in the fight to save her kingdom.

What makes this book especially fun is seeing how dangerous Jafar becomes when nobody is there to stop him. The story feels more like a fantasy rebellion than a traditional fairy tale and gives readers a chance to see what happens when the villain actually wins.

Best for: Readers who love action, adventure, and strong heroes overcoming impossible odds.

2. Once Upon a Dream (Sleeping Beauty)

What if Aurora never woke up?

Everyone remembers Prince Phillip’s kiss waking Aurora from her enchanted sleep. But what if it didn’t work?

Instead, Aurora becomes trapped in a dream world created by Maleficent. Inside this magical realm, reality constantly shifts, making it difficult to know who can be trusted and what is real.

As Aurora searches for a way home, she discovers hidden truths about herself, Maleficent, and the curse that changed her life forever.

The dream-like setting gives this book a unique atmosphere that feels very different from the movie. Readers who enjoy magical worlds and psychological mysteries often consider this one of the most creative entries in the series.

Best for: Readers who enjoy fantasy, magical worlds, and mysterious stories.

3. As Old as Time (Beauty and the Beast)

What if Belle’s mother cursed the Beast?

This novel explores one of the biggest unanswered questions from Beauty and the Beast: What happened to Belle’s mother?

When Belle discovers clues about her family’s past, she learns that her mother’s history may be connected to the Beast’s curse in ways she never imagined. As secrets begin to unfold, Belle must uncover the truth before it destroys everything she loves.

This story expands the world of the original movie beautifully. Instead of simply retelling the film, it adds entirely new layers to Belle’s family history and makes the story feel richer and more complete.

Best for: Readers who love mysteries, family secrets, and character-driven stories.

4. Reflection (Mulan)

What if Mulan traveled to the Underworld?

After Shang’s life is placed in danger, Mulan is forced to enter Diyu, the Chinese underworld, to save him.

Along the way, she encounters spirits, gods, mythical creatures, and powerful forces that challenge everything she believes about bravery and sacrifice.

Unlike many of the other Twisted Tales, this story dives deeply into Chinese mythology and folklore. The setting feels epic and adventurous, giving readers an entirely new perspective on Mulan’s courage.

The stakes are high, and Mulan’s determination makes her one of the strongest protagonists in the series.

Best for: Readers who love mythology, adventure, and powerful female heroes.

5. Part of Your World (The Little Mermaid)

What if Ariel never defeated Ursula?

Five years after Ursula’s victory, Ariel is no longer the hopeful young mermaid fans remember from the movie.

King Triton is gone, Ursula rules the seas, and Ariel has lost her voice. Living in a world controlled by the sea witch, Ariel joins forces with old friends and new allies to fight back.

This book essentially reads like an alternate sequel to The Little Mermaid. Seeing Ariel struggle through years of hardship before finding her strength again makes her journey especially compelling.

Many fans consider this one of the darkest and most emotional books in the series.

Best for: Readers who enjoy high-stakes adventures and underdog stories.

6. Mirror, Mirror (Snow White)

What if the Evil Queen poisoned the Prince?

Instead of waiting for rescue, Snow White must become the hero herself.

When the Evil Queen changes the course of events, Snow White is forced to rely on her intelligence, courage, and leadership to save both the prince and her kingdom.

This version of Snow White feels much more modern than the original fairy tale. She takes charge of her own destiny and proves she is far more than a princess waiting for someone else to save her.

Best for: Readers who enjoy empowered heroines and classic fairy-tale retellings.

7. Conceal, Don’t Feel (Frozen)

What if Anna and Elsa never knew each other?

After a childhood accident, Anna and Elsa grow up separated.

Without their close bond, the sisters become completely different people than fans remember from the movie. As fate begins to pull them back together, they must overcome years of distance, misunderstandings, and secrets.

The emotional heart of this story lies in watching the sisters rediscover one another. Readers who loved the relationship between Anna and Elsa in the films will find this alternate version fascinating.

Best for: Frozen fans and readers who enjoy family-centered stories.

8. Straight On Till Morning (Peter Pan)

What if Wendy first traveled to Neverland with Captain Hook?

Instead of joining Peter Pan, Wendy finds herself caught up in an adventure alongside Captain Hook.

As she spends more time with the infamous pirate, Wendy begins to question everything she thought she knew about Neverland, Peter, and Hook himself.

The shifting loyalties and unexpected character development make this one of the most unique books in the series. Readers often find themselves sympathizing with characters they never expected to like.

Best for: Readers who enjoy morally complex characters and adventure.

9. Unbirthday (Alice in Wonderland)

What if Alice returned to Wonderland and couldn’t remember it?

Years after her first adventure, Alice returns to Wonderland only to discover that something is terribly wrong.

Strange events involving time, memory, and forgotten friendships force Alice into a race against the clock to save Wonderland once again.

Like the original story, this book is wonderfully bizarre and imaginative. Every chapter brings another unexpected twist, making it one of the most unpredictable entries in the series.

Best for: Readers who enjoy whimsical fantasy and unusual worlds.

10. What Once Was Mine (Tangled)

What if Rapunzel’s mother drank from the wrong flower?

One magical mistake changes Rapunzel’s entire destiny.

As she grows older, Rapunzel begins uncovering secrets about who she truly is and the forces shaping her future. Along the way, she must decide whether to follow the path laid out for her or forge her own.

Fans of Tangled will love spending more time with Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, and the kingdom of Corona.

Best for: Readers who enjoy romance, adventure, and self-discovery stories.

11. Go the Distance (Hercules)

What if Meg became a goddess?

Megara finally gets her chance to shine in this mythology-filled adventure.

When she is unexpectedly granted godlike powers, Meg must navigate the complicated world of Mount Olympus while discovering what kind of person she truly wants to be.

This book expands the world of Hercules while giving one of Disney’s most beloved heroines the spotlight she deserves.

Best for: Readers who love Greek mythology and witty characters.

12. When You Wish Upon a Star (Pinocchio)

What if the Blue Fairy couldn’t help Pinocchio?

Without magical intervention, Pinocchio’s journey becomes far more difficult.

Alongside Geppetto, he must navigate challenges that test his courage, honesty, and determination.

The story explores themes of family, responsibility, and growing up, making it one of the more heartfelt entries in the series.

Best for: Readers who enjoy emotional stories and character growth.

13. Almost There (The Princess and the Frog)

What if Tiana’s dream came true too easily?

Tiana finally gets her restaurant—but achieving her dream comes with consequences she never expected.

As she enjoys the success she worked so hard to achieve, she begins realizing that some opportunities come with hidden costs.

This story explores ambition, sacrifice, and what truly matters in life, making it one of the more mature books in the series.

Best for: Older teens who enjoy thoughtful character-driven stories.

14. Fate Be Changed (Brave)

What if Merida’s destiny changed forever?

Merida’s wish sends her down a path she never expected.

Faced with difficult choices and magical consequences, she must determine whether fate controls her future or if she has the power to shape it herself.

Like the movie, the book focuses heavily on courage, family, and personal growth.

Best for: Readers who enjoy strong heroines and Celtic-inspired fantasy.

15. Sally’s Lament (The Nightmare Before Christmas)

What if Sally had her own adventure?

After discovering troubling secrets about Halloween Town, Sally embarks on a journey that takes her beyond the familiar world fans know from the film.

This story expands the mythology of Halloween Town while giving Sally a much larger role.

The spooky atmosphere makes it a perfect fall or Halloween read.

Best for: Teens who enjoy gothic fantasy and spooky adventures.

16. So This Is Love (Cinderella)

What if Cinderella never tried on the glass slipper?

Without the famous slipper fitting, Cinderella’s future changes dramatically.

Instead of immediately finding her happily-ever-after, she must navigate court life, hidden identities, and unexpected challenges.

The romance is still there, but the journey becomes far more complicated and rewarding.

Best for: Readers who love romance, royal drama, and fairy tales.

Why the Disney Twisted Tales Series Is So Much Fun

The biggest reason readers love these books is simple: they answer questions we’ve all asked while watching Disney movies.

What if the villain won?

What if the princess made a different choice?

What if fate changed everything?

Because readers already know the original stories, they immediately understand what’s different, making every twist feel exciting. Add in familiar characters, deeper world-building, and surprising plot developments, and it’s easy to see why so many teens become hooked on the series.

Whether you’re a lifelong Disney fan or simply love fantasy retellings, the Twisted Tales books offer a magical reading experience that proves every story has more than one possible ending.
