Family Camping Fun at Glendalough State Park, Minnesota

If you’re looking for a peaceful, nature-filled getaway with the kids, Glendalough State Park in west-central Minnesota is a perfect choice. Located near Battle Lake, this hidden gem offers a mix of outdoor adventures and family-friendly amenities that make camping with children both fun and easy.

🏕️ Family-Friendly Camping Options

Glendalough offers several unique camping experiences. The cart-in campsites are ideal for families—just park your car and use provided carts to bring your gear to your site. The short, flat walk makes it manageable even with little ones. For a more rustic adventure, try one of the park’s two yurts or four camper cabins. The yurts are cozy, round shelters accessible by foot, bike, or canoe, offering a fun twist on traditional camping.

The group campsite along Battle Creek is perfect for larger families or multiple families camping together. It’s close to the swimming beach, fishing pier, and picnic area, making it easy to keep everyone entertained.

🌳 Outdoor Activities for All Ages

Glendalough is packed with kid-friendly activities. Annie Battle Lake, the park’s centerpiece, is a no-motor lake, making it calm and safe for swimming, canoeing, and kayaking. The sandy beach is perfect for building sandcastles or wading in the shallow water.

The park’s nine miles of hiking trails and five miles of paved biking trails are great for exploring. The Annie Battle Lake Trail offers scenic views and is stroller-friendly. Kids will love spotting wildlife like deer, turtles, and various birds along the way.

For a unique adventure, try geocaching—a modern-day treasure hunt using GPS. It’s a fun way to engage kids in exploring the park.

🎒 Tips for Camping with Kids

To make the most of your trip, involve your children in planning and setting up camp. Assign them age-appropriate tasks like gathering sticks for the fire or helping set up the tent. The Minnesota DNR suggests keeping things simple and practicing camping at home before your trip.

Don’t forget to pack extra layers, plenty of snacks, and some favorite games or books for downtime. Glendalough also offers free nature kits at the ranger station, including birding and fishing gear, which can add educational fun to your stay.

Glendalough State Park combines the tranquility of nature with family-friendly amenities, making it an excellent choice for camping with kids. Whether you’re hiking, swimming, or simply enjoying a campfire under the stars, it’s a place where family memories are made.
