We do family game night once a week in our house. Sometimes more often if my nephews are over to visit. We love trying out new games. The kids have a great time and I like that they are not sitting in front of a screen. Tonight, one of the games we are playing is Lumpy Cubes Hero Edition. I’d never played before so I was not sure what to expect.
The basics – This game is intended for ages 6 years old and up and designed for 1-4 players. I have a 4-year-old (almost 5) and a 7-year-old playing tonight.
Inside the box, you’ll find a deck of cards and 16 cubes, 4 cubes in each color. On the cubes, there are faces, 2 faces per cube.
The rules for the game is fairly simple. Each player takes one color, place the deck cards in the middle of the table. Each player draws one card and whoever stacks the cubes to resemble the card they took wins the game. Seems pretty simple, right? Well, there’s a hitch.
Remember, how on each cube there are 2 faces? Well, you are only using 1 face on each cube at a time. But you have to make sure you use the right face on each cube. For example, there may be a cube that you could use either side of because the face is used in your card but you can’t. You have to choose which side to use for your build. The other cube you use will only have one of the faces on it. So you have to choose wisely or you could find yourself rebuilding.
Both kids like the game. Jamison’s favorite part was knocking the blocks down after he built his creating. But Peyton really loved trying to race against others and build her cubes the fastest.
Can this be played with younger kids? Yes, depending on the child. Jamison is really quick with sorting and shapes. He couldn’t do it as quick as Peyton but he still enjoyed it. I can see Peyton playing this by herself too. She really enjoyed it.
