George Washington has a special place in Americans’ hearts. Being he was the first president and a trailblazer in his time many Americans can recognize him with his white hair and suit. Times chose George Washington to be the focus of their second book in the series Heroes of History.
In this book, the focus is not entirely on Washington’s time as president. He led a very colorful life full of adventures, ups, and downs that could fill several books! As a young man, he explored the American Wild West and the wilderness, fought in uprisings against the French and tried to capture love interests that were not so interested in him.
Heroes of History will focus on his hardships and heartaches of his early years as he makes his way into politics. Then there were betrayals and victories to capture as well in his public life. They really put a lot into this book but in a kid-friendly way.
The book is filled with pictures of oil paintings from Washington’s time as well as replicas of handwritten documents. It really helps to engage the child in the book and keep them turning those pages and learning more. But what I really like is the timeline that is in the back of the book laying out how everything happened. It really helps put the timeline in perspective.
Heroes of History is perfect for any young mind that wants to get more information on how the United States government came to be and what obstacles and setbacks were overcome. George Washington is just one of the books in the Heroes of History series. It was the second in this series. The first is Heroes of History: Alexander Hamilton. Hopefully, there are more to come. I really enjoyed these books and thought they were a great way to teach my child a little bit about American History.
