How to Create the Perfect Cat-Friendly Home | Indoor Cat Tips

How to Create the Perfect Cat-Friendly Home

How to Create the Perfect Cat-Friendly HomeIf you’ve ever watched your cat squeeze into the tiniest cardboard box, perch on top of the refrigerator, or spend hours birdwatching from a sunny window, you’ve probably realized something important—cats see our homes very differently than we do.

While we focus on decorating and organizing, our feline friends are thinking about climbing, hiding, hunting, and finding the perfect sunny spot for an afternoon nap.

The good news is that you don’t need a huge house or an expensive renovation to create a space your cat will love. A few thoughtful additions can turn almost any home into a feline paradise.

Over the years, we’ve learned exactly what makes Ellie and Jinx happiest. Ellie is our explorer. She loves climbing to the highest perch she can find and supervising everything happening in the house. Jinx prefers cozy hideaways where he can quietly watch the world before suddenly joining the fun. Giving each of them spaces that match their personalities has made our home much more enjoyable—for both them and us.

If you’re looking for ways to make your home more cat-friendly, here are some simple ideas that can help.

Give Your Cat Vertical Space

Cats naturally love to climb.

In the wild, climbing helps them:

  • Stay safe
  • Watch for prey
  • Observe their surroundings
  • Feel secure

Indoor cats have the same instincts.

Adding vertical space is one of the easiest ways to enrich your cat’s environment.

Great options include:

  • Cat trees
  • Wall-mounted cat shelves
  • Window perches
  • Tall bookcases (secured to the wall)

The higher your cat can safely climb, the happier they often become.

Create Cozy Hiding Spots

While many cats enjoy climbing, they also appreciate having quiet places where they can relax.

Some easy hiding spots include:

  • Covered cat beds
  • Cat tunnels
  • Blankets draped over chairs
  • Empty cardboard boxes
  • Small pet tents

Having a safe retreat helps cats feel secure, especially when visitors come over or the house gets noisy.

Let Them Watch the Outdoors

Television is nice.

Birds are better.

Many indoor cats can spend hours watching:

  • Birds
  • Squirrels
  • Rabbits
  • Butterflies
  • Falling leaves

A window perch instantly creates endless entertainment.

If possible, place a bird feeder outside one of your windows for even more excitement.

Ellie could spend an entire afternoon sitting by the window, carefully watching every bird that lands nearby. Jinx usually joins her eventually, although he seems just as interested in watching the neighborhood as he is the wildlife.

Provide Plenty of Scratching Options

Scratching is completely normal.

Cats scratch to:

  • Stretch
  • Sharpen their claws
  • Mark territory
  • Relieve stress

Instead of trying to stop the behavior, provide appropriate places to scratch.

Try offering:

  • Tall scratching posts
  • Cardboard scratchers
  • Horizontal scratch pads
  • Sisal scratching posts

Every cat has a preference, so offering a variety helps.

Rotate Toys

Cats get bored with the same toys every day.

Instead of leaving every toy out all the time, rotate them every week or two.

Your cat will feel like they’re getting something new—even though it’s a favorite they’ve already played with.

Some great enrichment toys include:

  • Feather wand toys
  • Plastic springs
  • Ball tracks
  • Crinkle balls
  • Catnip mice
  • Puzzle feeders

Keep Food and Water Separate

Many cats naturally prefer their water away from their food.

If possible:

  • Place food bowls in one location.
  • Put the water bowl or fountain a few feet away.

Some cats drink significantly more water when it’s offered separately.

A cat water fountain can encourage even better hydration.

Make Time for Daily Play

A cat-friendly home isn’t just about furniture.

It’s also about interaction.

Try scheduling:

  • Morning play sessions
  • Evening wand toy games
  • Puzzle feeder time
  • Treat hunts

Even 15 minutes of interactive play each day can help reduce boredom and strengthen your bond.

Add Sunny Nap Spots

If you’ve ever wondered where your cat disappeared to…

Check the nearest sunbeam.

Cats love warm places to nap.

Try placing a bed or blanket near:

  • South-facing windows
  • Sliding glass doors
  • Sunrooms

You may discover your cat’s new favorite spot.

Keep Dangerous Plants Out of Reach

Some common houseplants are toxic to cats.

Always research new plants before bringing them home.

Instead, consider cat-safe options like:

  • Spider plants
  • Cat grass
  • Areca palms
  • Boston ferns

If you’re unsure whether a plant is safe, keep it completely out of your cat’s reach.

Secure Loose Cords

Cats love batting at dangling cords.

Protect them by:

  • Using cord covers
  • Bundling cables together
  • Keeping chargers unplugged when not in use

A little prevention goes a long way.

Give Each Cat Their Own Space

If you have multiple cats, remember that they don’t always want to share everything.

Provide multiple:

  • Beds
  • Scratching posts
  • Water bowls
  • Food stations
  • Litter boxes

Having choices helps reduce competition and stress.

Don’t Underestimate the Cardboard Box

You can spend hundreds of dollars on fancy cat furniture…

And your cat may still choose the shipping box.

Ellie and Jinx prove this almost every time we get a delivery.

We’ll carefully unpack something new for them, and before we even have it assembled, one of them is already sitting inside the empty box.

Sometimes they’ll take turns.

Sometimes they both try to fit inside the same box at once, which never goes quite as planned.

It’s a reminder that cats don’t need expensive things to be happy.

Sometimes simple really is best.

Ellie’s Favorite Room

If Ellie could design her dream room, it would probably include:

  • A giant cat tree by the window
  • Several fleece blankets for making biscuits
  • A sunny windowsill for birdwatching
  • A cardboard box that magically never gets recycled
  • Plenty of room to sprint during her evening zoomies

Jinx would simply request a cozy hiding spot nearby where he could quietly supervise everything Ellie is doing.

Their personalities are completely different, but creating spaces that suit both of them has made our home feel more comfortable for everyone.

Creating a cat-friendly home doesn’t require a complete makeover.

By adding climbing opportunities, cozy hiding places, scratching posts, interactive toys, sunny nap spots, and plenty of daily play, you’ll give your indoor cat an environment where they can thrive.

Every cat has their own personality. Ellie loves climbing, birdwatching, and claiming every cardboard box she can find, while Jinx prefers quiet observation before joining in on the fun.

The best cat-friendly home is one that gives your cat opportunities to explore, play, relax, and simply be a cat.

And at the end of the day, that’s exactly what every feline deserves.

🐾 Ellie’s Tip of the Day

“If you buy me a fancy new cat bed… please leave the box. I need to compare them before making my final decision.” – Ellie
