Even big kids need some suggestions on what to read over the summer. Our suggestions for sixth graders are more along the line of novels or series that will build upon each book. Here are a few our suggestions –
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: The Illustrated Edition (Harry Potter, Book 1) by J.K. Rowling
For the first time, J.K. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter books will be presented in lavishly illustrated full-color editions. Kate Greenaway-award-winning artist Jim Kay has created over 100 stunning illustrations, making this deluxe format a perfect gift as much for a child being introduced to the series, as for the dedicated fan.
Harry Potter has never been the star of a Quidditch team, scoring points while riding a broom far above the ground. He knows no spells, has never helped to hatch a dragon, and has never worn a cloak of invisibility.
All he knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley — a great big swollen spoiled bully. Harry’s room is a tiny closet at the foot of the stairs, and he hasn’t had a birthday party in eleven years.
But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger: a letter with an invitation to an incredible place that Harry — and anyone who reads about him — will find unforgettable.
The Pandora Device(Camp Hawthorne Book 1) by Joyce McPherson

And despite warnings to leave the past alone, she uncovers a mystery linked to her parents. Now she must decide how much she will risk to find the truth.

The Phantom of New York: Volume I – Peter and the Crown by A.L. Janney

His family has moved without warning, starting a new life in apartment 201. Peter’s sorrow and anger quickly fade the first time he leaves his room, entering the wondrous world of the wealthy, the quirky, and the mysterious.

Soon he’s playing at Central Park, helping his father work underground, mingling with fascinating residents, and homeschooling himself. The other children teach him the workings of New York City, including tales of the infamous Phantom…
Soon, however, danger creeps into the Crown, seeking to steal treasure and destroy Peter’s new home. Little does he know, mystical forces have chosen Peter to take center stage in the most courageous story ever told!

Wanted (The Chase Ryder Series) by Jo Ho
What would you do if you found a super intelligent dog only to discover he had valuable information inside his head that could change mankind forever?
The first time I saw him, I had no idea he had recently escaped from a mysterious lab. That he had been created there.
I’d been living on the streets which was tough, but preferable to home. Then one day, I stumbled upon this mangy dog being attacked.
I saved him. But then he saved me and I realized that Muttface wasn’t a normal dog. He was crazy intelligent. I’m talking Mensa levels.
When we sought help from a grieving veterinarian named Sully, his clinic was attacked and destroyed by mercenaries. So now here we are, the three of us. On the run across the country against a powerful enemy. Who are they and what do they want with us?
Through the danger, terror, and pain, one thing was becoming clear to me: I have finally found the family I always wanted and I will do anything to keep them safe…
Even if it means risking my own life.
