Minnesota State Fair Chocolate Dipped Bananas
One of my favorite traditions every summer is visiting the Minnesota State Fair. Of course, there are the famous cheese curds, Sweet Martha’s Cookies, and endless new foods to try each year, but sometimes it’s the simple treats that become family favorites.
One snack that surprised us was the chocolate dipped frozen banana.
At first, it didn’t seem all that exciting. After all, it’s just a frozen banana dipped in chocolate. But after taking that first bite, we completely understood why people line up for them every year. The frozen banana is cool and refreshing on a hot August afternoon, while the chocolate shell adds the perfect amount of sweetness.
This homemade version takes things one step further by adding crunchy toffee bits for an extra layer of flavor and texture. They’re incredibly easy to make and are the perfect frozen treat all summer long—not just during fair season!

How to Make Chocolate Dipped Bananas
Step 1: Prepare the Bananas
Peel each banana and cut it in half crosswise. Carefully insert a popsicle stick into the cut end of each banana half.
Place the bananas on a parchment or wax paper-lined baking sheet.
Freeze for about 30 minutes, or until firm.

Step 2: Melt the Chocolate
Pour the chocolate chips into a microwave-safe measuring cup or tall mug.
Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval until the chocolate is completely smooth.
Depending on your microwave, this usually takes about 1 to 1½ minutes.

Step 3: Prepare the Toppings
Spread the toffee bits onto a small plate or shallow bowl.
Having everything ready before dipping makes the process much easier.
Step 4: Dip the Bananas
Working one banana at a time, dip each frozen banana into the melted chocolate.
Gently rotate the banana to coat it evenly, then allow any excess chocolate to drip off.
Immediately roll the chocolate-coated banana in the toffee bits until evenly covered.
Place it back onto the lined baking sheet.

Step 5: Freeze Again
Return the bananas to the freezer for another 30 minutes, or until the chocolate shell is completely hardened.
Once frozen, they’re ready to enjoy!

Storage Tips
Store your chocolate dipped bananas in a freezer-safe airtight container or freezer bag for up to 2 months.
To prevent sticking, place a piece of parchment paper between layers.
Easy Topping Ideas
While toffee bits are one of our favorites, you can easily customize these frozen treats with other toppings.
Try:
- Rainbow sprinkles
- Mini chocolate chips
- Chopped peanuts
- Crushed peanuts
- Mini M&M’s

Tips for Success
- Freeze the bananas before dipping so the chocolate hardens almost instantly.
- Use bananas that are ripe but still firm.
- A tall measuring cup makes dipping much easier than using a shallow bowl.
- Work quickly so the chocolate doesn’t begin to harden while adding toppings.
- If your chocolate becomes too thick, microwave it for another 10–15 seconds.
