Halloween at the Minnesota Zoo: Everything to Know About the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular 2026

If there’s one Minnesota Halloween event that deserves a spot on your fall bucket list, the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at the Minnesota Zoo is definitely in the running.

Thousands of glowing pumpkins.

A nighttime walk through the woods.

Incredible carved designs.

Fall treats.

Music.

And absolutely no requirement that someone jump out from behind a tree and scare you.

That’s my kind of Halloween event.

The Minnesota Zoo’s Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular returns for 2026 with more than 5,000 illuminated pumpkins and an expanded experience that runs from September 25 through November 1.

Whether you’re taking younger kids, teenagers, grandparents or turning it into a fall date night, here’s everything you should know before visiting the Minnesota Zoo during Halloween season.

When Is the Minnesota Zoo Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular in 2026?

The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular runs:

September 25 through November 1, 2026

Event hours are:

Sunday through Thursday: 5:30 p.m. – 11 p.m.

Friday and Saturday: 5:30 p.m. – Midnight

November 1: 5:30 p.m. – 10 p.m.

The actual Pumpkin Trail uses timed entry, so you’ll select a specific time when purchasing your ticket.

The Minnesota Zoo recommends arriving about 30 minutes before your scheduled trail time.

And I would listen to them.

You have to park.

Walk from the parking lot.

Get everyone through the entrance.

Potentially use the bathroom.

Someone will decide they’re hungry.

Someone else will suddenly need their sweatshirt from the car.

You know how family outings work.

Give yourself the extra time.

More Than 5,000 Glowing Pumpkins

This is what makes the event so spectacular.

The trail features more than 5,000 illuminated pumpkins.

And we’re not just talking about 5,000 basic triangle-eyes-and-a-smile jack-o’-lanterns.

Many of these pumpkins are intricately carved works of art.

You’ll see recognizable characters, animals, people, objects and elaborate designs throughout the trail.

The displays are created by Passion for Pumpkins with help from Minnesota artists.

It’s one of those events where you’ll repeatedly stop and say:

How did somebody carve THAT into a pumpkin?

Meanwhile, I’m proud if I successfully cut the top off ours without breaking the stem.

There’s a New Trivia Twist for 2026

The 2026 Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is adding something fun to the trail.

Trivia.

As you walk, you’ll encounter trivia questions.

But instead of simply reading the answers on a sign, you’ll need to look at the pumpkins.

The carved pumpkins themselves provide the answers.

Some questions are designed for kids while others should be more recognizable to adults.

That makes the trail a little more interactive, especially if you’re visiting with older kids or teenagers.

You aren’t just walking past the pumpkins.

You’re actually looking closely at them and trying to solve the questions along the way.

I can already see families becoming unnecessarily competitive about this.

And by families, I mean me.

The Experience Starts Before the Pumpkin Trail

Don’t think you need to rush directly from the parking lot to the trail.

Part of the 2026 experience takes place around Central Plaza.

The Zoo has expanded the event so there’s more to enjoy before you begin your walk.

Plan some time for:

Music
Activities
Seasonal food
Sweet treats
Drinks
Halloween atmosphere
Photos

This is another reason arriving early makes sense.

Your ticket time is when you’re supposed to enter the Pumpkin Trail—not necessarily when you should pull into the parking lot.

How Long Is the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular?

Plan on spending roughly 40 to 50 minutes on the actual pumpkin trail.

The trail itself is approximately a quarter mile.

But there’s another approximately quarter-mile walk from Celebration Plaza to the beginning of the trail.

Altogether, you’ll do a fair amount of walking.

The route also includes changes in elevation and a considerable incline.

This is important to know if you’re visiting with grandparents, younger children or anyone who has mobility limitations.

Strollers and wagons are welcome.

The trail is also accessible for guests using mobility devices, although you’ll still encounter those elevation changes and inclines.

Wheelchairs and motorized ECVs are available to rent on a first-come, first-served basis.

Is the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular Scary?

No.

And that’s one of the reasons I love this event for families.

The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is designed to be a family-friendly Halloween experience.

You’re going to encounter:

Darkness
Thousands of illuminated pumpkins
Colorful lighting
Fog
Music
Halloween imagery
Special effects

But this isn’t a haunted house.

There aren’t scare actors waiting to jump out at your children.

That makes it a great choice for families who love Halloween but don’t necessarily love being terrified.

It’s Great for Younger Kids

This is one Halloween attraction where younger children can really participate.

They can look for favorite characters carved into pumpkins, answer trivia questions, enjoy the lights and see thousands of jack-o’-lanterns without worrying about someone chasing them.

And because strollers and wagons are allowed, you don’t have to depend on a tired four-year-old making the entire walk.

Parents everywhere understand why that’s important.

But Teenagers Can Have Fun Too

This isn’t just a little-kid Halloween event.

The pumpkin artwork is genuinely impressive.

The nighttime atmosphere is beautiful.

There are tons of photo opportunities.

There’s food.

There’s music.

And the new trivia component gives older kids something else to do while they’re walking.

It would also make a really fun teen friend-group outing.

Let them grab drinks or snacks, walk the trail, take a million pictures and enjoy a Halloween night that isn’t centered around little-kid activities.

There Are Three Adults-Only Nights in 2026

Here’s something new to put on your radar if you want a Halloween date night instead.

The Minnesota Zoo is offering three 18+ Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular nights in 2026.

They’re calling the experience:

All Treats, No Tykes.

I have to admit—that’s pretty funny.

September 25: Oktoberfest at the Farm

The first adults-only evening combines the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular with Oktoberfest fun at the Zoo’s Farm.

Guests can see farm animals, enjoy German-inspired food, grab drinks and listen to a polka band before heading to the Pumpkin Trail.

There are also later ticket options if you want to skip Oktoberfest and simply experience the pumpkins without children.

October 7: Trivia Night

Trivia Mafia comes to the Zoo for an adults-only trivia event before the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular.

You can choose a trivia-plus-pumpkins experience or attend a later adults-only Pumpkin Trail time.

October 31: Halloween Night

Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026.

And the Minnesota Zoo is taking advantage of it.

The Halloween-night Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is reserved for adults 18 and older.

Expect thousands of glowing pumpkins, festive drinks and plenty of Halloween atmosphere.

Costumes are welcome.

Children are not.

If you’ve been looking for a different Halloween date-night idea around the Twin Cities, this could be a really fun one.

Try the Priority Pumpkin Pass

Another option for 2026 is the Priority Pumpkin Pass.

This is an add-on to your regular Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular admission.

It gives you expedited entry to the Pumpkin Trail and allows you unlimited access to the trail during the evening.

So if you finish and realize you missed something—or just want to see everything again—you can go back through.

Only 100 Priority Pumpkin Passes are available each night, so this isn’t something I’d wait until the last minute to decide on.

The Priority Pumpkin Pass is not available during the adults-only nights.

You Can Have Your Own Pumpkin Carved

This might be one of the coolest options.

The Minnesota Zoo offers personalized pumpkins.

You can have a professionally carved pumpkin featuring a personal message or image placed directly on the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular trail on the night you visit.

Imagine walking along and suddenly your teenager sees:

HAPPY 16TH BIRTHDAY, EMMA!

glowing from a pumpkin.

Or using one for:

Birthday surprises
Anniversary messages
Marriage proposals
Family names
Special celebrations

Your personalized pumpkin is displayed during your visit, and you can take it home afterward.

The package also includes Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular admission for two people.

Requests need to be submitted at least 10 business days before your visit.

Come Hungry

Do not make the mistake of assuming this is simply a walk-through event.

There is food.

And 2026 has some pretty fun Halloween choices.

The Minnesota Zoo is offering seasonal meals, snacks, desserts and drinks throughout the event.

New options include things like the Banshee’s Irish Spice Bag and Ghostly Inferno Burger.

You’ll also find familiar favorites including:

Burgers
Chicago-style hot dogs
Cheese curds
Loaded tots
Bavarian pretzels
Kettle corn
Pumpkin swirl cake
White chocolate pumpkin cookies
Spooky s’mores kits

There are also vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free choices available.

Don’t Miss the Halloween Drinks

There are seasonal nonalcoholic drinks too.

The Harvest Moon Hot Chocolate combines dark chocolate with sweet orange syrup, whipped cream, sprinkles, brownie bites and chocolate-covered dried orange.

Then there’s Firelight Cider, featuring warm apple cider with caramel, whipped cream and cinnamon.

Basically, Minnesota figured out long ago that the secret to surviving an outdoor October event is putting something warm in your hands.

Adults 21 and older can also find alcoholic drinks at select locations.

There’s a Daytime Halloween Activity Too

If you’re already planning a regular Zoo visit during September or October, there’s another seasonal activity to look for.

From September 1 through October 31, 2026, the Minnesota Zoo is hosting the Keebler Spookie Stripes Safari.

And this one is included with regular daytime Zoo admission.

Guests scan a QR code at the entrance and then search the Zoo for specially striped animals while learning about them.

Participants can also enter a sweepstakes for prizes.

It’s a cute way to add a little Halloween-season fun to a regular daytime Zoo visit.

Can You See Animals During the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular?

This is important.

The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular isn’t the same as visiting the Zoo during regular daytime hours.

Most animal-viewing areas are closed during the nighttime event.

Guests can currently view animals in Discovery Bay until 8 p.m., but other animal-viewing areas and the Treetop Trail are closed during the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular.

If seeing animals is a priority, I’d make it a bigger Zoo day.

Visit during regular hours.

See the animals.

Take a break.

Grab some food.

Then stay for the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular that evening.

How Much Are Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular Tickets?

For 2026, regular tickets range from approximately:

Adults: $23–$30

Children and adults 65+: $19–$26

Children ages two and younger are free and don’t need a ticket.

Minnesota Zoo members receive discounted event admission.

Non-members should also budget $10 per vehicle for parking.

Tickets must be purchased online in advance for a specific date and time.

And this is one event where I wouldn’t procrastinate.

The Minnesota Zoo says the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular sells out every year.

When Do 2026 Tickets Go on Sale?

Minnesota Zoo members receive exclusive presale access beginning:

September 2, 2026

General public ticket sales begin:

September 8, 2026

If you already know you want to go—especially if you want an October weekend or MEA dates—I’d buy your tickets sooner rather than later.

MEA is particularly popular and can sell out.

What Should You Wear?

Remember:

This event is outside.

At night.

In Minnesota.

Between late September and November.

You know what that means.

Check the forecast approximately 47 times before leaving home.

I’d recommend:

Comfortable walking shoes
Layers
Sweatshirt or fleece
Weather-appropriate jacket
Warm socks
Hat and gloves later in October if needed

The event operates rain or shine, so bring rain gear when necessary.

Costumes are allowed too.

Just leave full-face masks and weapon-like costume props at home.

Be Prepared for Lights, Fog and Sound

Parents of children who are sensitive to sensory input should know what to expect.

The event includes:

Fog effects

Amplified sound
Crowds

The Minnesota Zoo specifically suggests that guests sensitive to sound may want to bring ear protection or noise-reducing headphones.

If your child tends to become overwhelmed by busy nighttime events, an earlier time slot may also be worth considering.

Take Pictures—But Leave the Selfie Stick Home

You’re allowed to take photos and videos along the trail.

And trust me, you’re going to want pictures.

But the Zoo doesn’t allow:

Flash photography
Tripods
Monopods
Selfie sticks

Keep the trail moving and be considerate of the people behind you.

Nobody wants to spend half their evening waiting while someone stages a 17-minute pumpkin photoshoot for Instagram.

I think this one has such broad appeal because it isn’t trying to be terrifying.

Little kids can enjoy it.

Parents can enjoy it.

Grandparents can enjoy it.

Couples can turn it into a date night.

And adults even have three kid-free evenings to choose from in 2026.

More than 5,000 artistically carved pumpkins glowing along a wooded trail is simply something you don’t see every day.

Add the music, fall food, drinks, trivia and nighttime atmosphere, and you’ve got a pretty memorable Minnesota October night.

Celebrate Halloween at the Minnesota Zoo in 2026
