Patriotic Candy Corn Popcorn Recipe | Easy Fourth of July Party Snack

Patriotic Candy Corn Popcorn

Looking for the perfect red, white, and blue treat to serve at your next summer celebration? This Patriotic Candy Corn Popcorn is colorful, crunchy, sweet, and guaranteed to be the first snack to disappear! Whether you’re celebrating the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day, or simply hosting a backyard BBQ, this festive popcorn mix is a fun dessert that both kids and adults will love.

Coated in homemade candy coating and tossed with patriotic M&M’s and chocolate-covered pretzels, every handful is packed with sweet, salty, and crunchy goodness. It also makes a fantastic homemade gift, party favor, or snack for fireworks!

Best of all, it’s surprisingly easy to make and can be prepared a day or two ahead of your celebration.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Perfect for Fourth of July celebrations
  • Bright red, white, and blue colors
  • Sweet, crunchy, and addicting
  • Easy to make ahead
  • Great for parties and BBQs
  • Makes a large batch for sharing

Ingredients

  • 16 cups popped popcorn
  • 1½ cups unsalted butter
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup light corn syrup
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon blue food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon white food coloring (available at Hobby Lobby)
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups Patriotic M&M’s
  • 1 bag patriotic chocolate-covered pretzels (Sam’s Club)

Directions

Step 1: Prepare the Oven

Preheat your oven to 250°F.

Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.

Spread the popped popcorn evenly between both baking sheets.

Step 2: Make the Candy Coating

Place three medium saucepans on the stove over medium heat.

Into each saucepan, add:

  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ¼ cup light corn syrup
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Allow the butter to melt completely.

Stir everything together until combined.

Bring each saucepan to a boil while stirring constantly.

Once boiling, stop stirring and allow the mixture to boil for 4 minutes.

Step 3: Add the Colors

Remove each saucepan from the heat.

Color one batch red, one batch white, and one batch blue.

Stir until each mixture is smooth and evenly colored.

Add ¼ teaspoon baking soda to each saucepan and stir quickly.

The mixture will foam and nearly double in size. This is exactly what you want!

Step 4: Coat the Popcorn

Pour the colored candy mixtures over the popcorn.

Using a large spatula, gently stir until the popcorn is evenly coated.

Don’t worry if some pieces overlap—everything will get coated during baking.

Step 5: Bake

Place both baking sheets into the oven.

Bake for 1 hour, stirring the popcorn every 15 minutes.

This helps dry the coating while keeping every piece crisp and crunchy.

Step 6: Cool & Finish

Remove the popcorn from the oven.

Allow it to cool for about 5 minutes.

Once slightly cooled, gently stir in:

  • 2 cups Patriotic M&M’s
  • Patriotic chocolate-covered pretzels

Break apart any large clusters if desired.

Serve immediately or store for later.

Serving Ideas

This patriotic popcorn is perfect for:

  • Fourth of July parties
  • Memorial Day celebrations
  • Labor Day BBQs
  • Graduation parties
  • Summer picnics
  • Family movie nights
  • Pool parties
  • Fireworks gatherings

It also looks adorable packaged in clear cellophane bags tied with festive ribbon for party favors or hostess gifts.

Tips for Perfect Candy Popcorn

Use freshly popped popcorn. Fresh popcorn creates the best texture and flavor.

Remove unpopped kernels before adding the candy coating to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Work quickly once the baking soda is added since the candy mixture begins to set fast.

Stir every 15 minutes while baking so the coating dries evenly.

Allow the popcorn to cool completely before storing to keep it crunchy.

Storage

Store the popcorn in an airtight container or zip-top bag at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Avoid refrigerating it, as moisture can soften the candy coating.

Can I Make It Ahead?

Absolutely!

This recipe is actually even better when made 1–2 days before your party, making it a stress-free dessert for busy holiday weekends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use microwave popcorn?

Yes, but choose plain or lightly salted popcorn without butter flavoring for the best results.

Where can I find white food coloring?

White food coloring can often be found at Hobby Lobby, craft stores, or online in the cake decorating section.

Can I add different candies?

Definitely! Try adding mini marshmallows, red and blue sprinkles, yogurt-covered raisins, or festive candies to customize the mix.

Can I freeze this popcorn?

Freezing isn’t recommended because the candy coating can become sticky once thawed.

This Patriotic Candy Corn Popcorn is one of those recipes that instantly makes any celebration feel festive. The colorful candy coating, crunchy popcorn, chocolate-covered pretzels, and patriotic M&M’s create the perfect balance of sweet and salty flavors that everyone loves.

Whether you’re watching fireworks, hosting a neighborhood cookout, or filling treat bags for a party, this fun popcorn recipe is guaranteed to become a family favorite year after year. Make a big batch—you’ll be surprised how quickly it disappears!
