If you’re looking for a fun indoor activity to add to your Minnesota Halloween bucket list, SEA LIFE at Mall of America is one of those places that fits surprisingly well.
You don’t need haunted houses.
You don’t need monsters jumping out from behind a wall.
And most importantly, you don’t need to stand outside in 42-degree Minnesota rain while insisting to your children that everyone is having a wonderful fall family day.
Instead, you can head underwater.
SEA LIFE Minnesota Aquarium is located inside Mall of America in Bloomington and is home to thousands of creatures, including sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, jellyfish and plenty of animals that already look like they belong in a Halloween movie.
Here’s why SEA LIFE is such a fun place to visit during Halloween season.
Halloween Under the Sea
SEA LIFE doesn’t need a huge Halloween transformation to feel a little spooky.
Much of the aquarium is already dark and atmospheric.
You’re walking through glowing exhibits.
Jellyfish float through illuminated tanks.
Sharks cruise overhead.
Stingrays glide past you.
Then there are creatures hiding in rocks and corners that you’re not entirely sure you want to meet in the wild.
It’s basically nature’s version of Halloween.
Except instead of someone wearing a monster costume, the monster might have 300 teeth.
Walk Through the 300-Foot Underwater Tunnel
The star of SEA LIFE at Mall of America is its massive underwater tunnel.
The tunnel stretches approximately 300 feet and takes you underneath an enormous aquatic habitat filled with marine life.
You can watch sharks swim overhead.
See stingrays glide across the water.
Look for rescued sea turtles.
And come face-to-face with creatures you normally wouldn’t get anywhere near.
During October, the dark tunnel feels especially appropriate.
It’s spooky without actually being a haunted attraction.
That makes it a great choice for kids who love Halloween but don’t necessarily enjoy jump scares or people chasing them around with chainsaws.
Come Face-to-Face With Sharks
If your kids want something scary for Halloween, show them a shark.
Problem solved.
SEA LIFE is home to several shark species and gives visitors an incredible opportunity to see them up close.
From inside the underwater tunnel, you may have sharks swimming directly above or beside you.
There’s something very different about seeing one through an aquarium window versus having one cruise approximately three feet above your head.
It’s fascinating.
It’s beautiful.
And it’s just creepy enough for October.
Find the Giant Sawfish
One of the creatures you definitely don’t see every day is the sawfish.
SEA LIFE’s Shark Cove includes an enormous green sawfish.
Sawfish have long, flat snouts lined with tooth-like structures that make them look like they were specifically designed by someone creating creatures for a Halloween movie.
They’re actually rays rather than sharks, which makes them even more interesting.
Kids who love unusual animals will definitely want to look for them.
Visit the Jellyfish
If I were designing a Halloween aquarium, jellyfish would absolutely be included.
They’re practically perfect already.
They float.
They glow.
They’re translucent.
And they somehow manage to look beautiful and slightly alien at the exact same time.
SEA LIFE’s jellyfish displays are one of those areas where you’ll probably stop longer than you planned.
The lighting and movement make them mesmerizing to watch.
They’re also fantastic for Halloween photos.
Brave the Rainforest
Just when you think you’re visiting an aquarium…
Welcome to the rainforest.
SEA LIFE also has a rainforest area featuring creatures you probably don’t want unexpectedly showing up in your bathroom.
We’re talking things like crocodiles and tarantulas.
Yes.
Tarantulas.
Happy Halloween.
For kids who love creepy-crawly animals, this area may be one of their favorite parts of the aquarium.
And for parents who don’t love spiders?
You can simply admire them from a very safe distance while appreciating the extremely thick glass between you.
Touch Real Sea Creatures
Not everything at SEA LIFE is creepy.
There are also opportunities to get hands-on with marine life.
At the Pacific Northwest Rockpool, guests can touch real sea creatures such as sea stars and anemones.
It’s a nice break from simply looking through the glass and gives kids a chance to experience something interactive.
SEA LIFE staff can also teach visitors about the animals they’re meeting.
This is one of those activities where the kids think they’re just having fun while they’re secretly learning something.
Parenting win.
Meet the Stingrays
Ray Lagoon is another area you’ll want to spend some time exploring.
Stingrays are fascinating to watch because they almost look like they’re flying through the water.
Kids can watch them swim, learn more about them and see them surprisingly close.
SEA LIFE also offers a Feed the Rays experience, depending on availability.
If you’re visiting specifically for an additional experience, check the day’s schedule before arriving.
Look for Rescued Sea Turtles
SEA LIFE is also home to rescued sea turtles.
Watching a sea turtle swim through the enormous underwater habitat is one of those moments that makes everyone stop for a minute.
Even teenagers.
Yes, even the teenager who has spent the previous 45 minutes pretending they’re far too cool to be impressed by an aquarium.
Eventually, a sea turtle wins.
Make Your Visit Even More Special With a Behind-the-Scenes Tour
If you’ve visited SEA LIFE before and want to make your Halloween-season visit feel different, consider adding a Behind-the-Scenes Tour.
The guided experience lasts approximately 45 minutes and gives visitors a look at how SEA LIFE cares for thousands of animals.
You’ll learn about feeding and animal care and even head above the Ocean Tunnel.
That’s where things get really interesting.
Instead of looking up at the sharks…
You’re looking down into their habitat.
The tours are available to all ages, although space is limited, so reserving ahead is a good idea.
Older Kids Can Try the Virtual Reality Experience
Families with older children can also add SEA LIFE’s Virtual Reality Experience.
Guests must be at least 40 inches tall to participate.
It’s another way to turn a regular aquarium visit into a bigger experience, especially if you’re planning an entire Halloween day at Mall of America.

Want Something Really Different? Snorkel at SEA LIFE
Here’s something I didn’t expect when looking at everything SEA LIFE currently offers:
You can actually snorkel there.
SEA LIFE’s Snorkel Package is available for guests ages nine and older and includes time in the water along with a deck tour and aquarium admission.
Reservations need to be made well in advance, and sessions are limited.
This is definitely more expensive than a normal aquarium visit, but for a birthday, special occasion or kid who is obsessed with marine animals, it could be a pretty unforgettable experience.
And let’s be real.
Swimming at an aquarium during Halloween season?
That’s a much better story for Monday morning at school than, “We carved pumpkins.”
Is SEA LIFE Scary During Halloween?
Not in the traditional Halloween sense.
SEA LIFE is a family attraction, not a haunted house.
No one should be jumping out from behind a tank trying to scare your preschooler.
But the aquarium naturally has some spooky elements that make it perfect for October.

During 2026, SEA LIFE is offering one free toddler general-admission ticket on Tuesdays with the purchase of a regularly priced adult ticket when the offer requirements are met.

Is SEA LIFE Fun for Teenagers?
I think SEA LIFE is one of those attractions people mistakenly assume is only for little kids.
It’s not.
Teenagers who are interested in animals, photography, marine biology or unusual experiences can still have a great time.
The underwater tunnel is impressive at any age.
The jellyfish are gorgeous.
The sharks are incredible.
And experiences like snorkeling, virtual reality and Behind-the-Scenes Tours give older kids additional options.
Plus, you’re already at Mall of America.
When you’re finished, your teenager has hundreds of stores, restaurants and other attractions waiting upstairs.
That’s a pretty easy sell.

During the fall, you can potentially combine several seasonal activities into one trip.
Start your day at SEA LIFE.
Walk through the underwater tunnel.
See the sharks.
Check out the jellyfish.
Then head upstairs for lunch.
Afterward, spend some time at Nickelodeon Universe and check out its Halloween atmosphere and seasonal activities.
Do some shopping.
Grab a Halloween treat.
Take some fall photos.
If Mall of America has additional Halloween events scheduled for your visit, add those too.
Suddenly you’ve created an entire Halloween day without going outside.
Which brings me to possibly the biggest advantage of all.
It’s Completely Indoors
Anyone who has lived in Minnesota for more than five minutes knows that October weather is basically a mystery box.
It might be 72 degrees.
It might snow.
There might be sideways rain.
There might be all three within 24 hours.
SEA LIFE is indoors.
Nickelodeon Universe is indoors.
Mall of America is indoors.
That makes this an excellent backup plan when your pumpkin patch day gets destroyed by terrible weather.
It’s also a good option when you simply don’t feel like bundling everyone up to spend four hours outside.

This is one tip I’d definitely follow.
SEA LIFE uses timed entry.
When purchasing tickets, you’ll choose a date and arrival time.
The aquarium recommends purchasing online ahead of time to guarantee your preferred entry.
Once you’re inside, however, you can explore at your own pace.
If you’re planning a busy October weekend at Mall of America, I’d reserve your aquarium time before leaving home rather than assuming you’ll be able to walk in whenever you want.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?
SEA LIFE says weekday afternoons and evenings are generally quieter.
Weekends, holidays and mornings tend to be busier.
If you’re homeschooling, have younger children or have a flexible schedule, a weekday October visit could be ideal.
You can explore the aquarium without as many crowds and then spend the rest of your day enjoying Mall of America.
Where Is SEA LIFE Located?
SEA LIFE Minnesota Aquarium is located on Level 1 on the east side of Mall of America.
The East Ramp is the closest place to park.
And parking at Mall of America is free.
That last part deserves appreciation.
Especially when you’re taking an entire family somewhere.
Watch for Special Halloween Events
SEA LIFE has offered seasonal and Halloween programming in previous years, so it’s worth watching the official event calendar as October gets closer.
As of now, a dedicated 2026 Halloween event hasn’t been announced.
If SEA LIFE adds Halloween activities, themed experiences or special October programming, I’ll update this guide with the details.
Until then, the aquarium itself is already one of the easiest ways to add a little spooky underwater fun to your fall.
SEA LIFE Is a Different Kind of Minnesota Halloween Activity
Not every Halloween activity needs to involve a haunted house.
Sometimes you just want pumpkins, costumes, candy and a shark swimming over your head.
SEA LIFE at Mall of America gives families something a little different to add to their October plans.
It’s indoors.
It works for toddlers through teenagers.
It’s educational without feeling like school.
And there are enough sharks, jellyfish, crocodiles, tarantulas and strange underwater creatures to give the entire experience just the right amount of Halloween creepiness.
