What’s New for Disney in 2018 Movie Edition

Peyton and I have spent a fair amount of time this past week at the movie theaters. The previews we have seen for what’s coming up in 2018 has left us super excited. It’s going to be an amazing year, especially for Disney!  Disney has 11 movies with set release dates for 2018. Yes, you read that correctly, there are 11! And they will all be on our must-see list. Here’s the breakdown, by release date so you know when to start looking for them.

Black Panther

Hits theaters February 16th, 2018

Finally,  Black Panther is getting his origin story! I love how each superhero has been getting a film to showcase them and how they came to be and what they stand for while at the same time roping in other superheroes and showcasing how they all work together and are stronger as a team.

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

A Wrinkle In Time

March 9, 2018

Meg Murry and her little brother, Charles Wallace, have been without their scientist father, Mr. Murry, for five years, ever since he discovered a new planet and used the concept known as a tesseract to travel there. Joined by Meg’s classmate Calvin O’Keefe and guided by the three mysterious astral travelers known as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which, the children brave a dangerous journey to a planet that possesses all of the evil in the universe.

Dolphins

April 20th, 2018

Disney Nature is bringing us a movie all about Dolphins and Dolphin society. Echo (a dolphin) is a youngster who can’t quite decide if it’s time to grow up and take on new responsibilities or give in to her silly side and just have fun. Dolphin society is tricky, and the coral reef that Echo and his family call home depends on all of its inhabitants to keep it healthy. But Echo has a tough time resisting the many adventures the ocean has to offer.

Avengers: Infinity War

May 4th, 2018

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, the Avengers remained fractured into two separate factions. However, nothing could prepare both sides for the greatest threat they’ve ever faced: the mad titan Thanos has claimed the six Infinity Stones and is about to use the power of the Infinity Gauntlet to wipe out the entire universe, starting with Earth. Thus, with the fate of Earth and the universe at stake, it will take both sides of the Avengers alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy to take down Thanos for good and save the universe from the brink of destruction.

Peyton really wants to see this one! With Groot and Black Widow appearing, her two favs, she can’t wait to see it.

Solo

May 25th, 2018

Now, this is not a continuation of the Star Wars storyline but a spin-off. It’s said to be the story of Hans Solo the early years.  Everything about this film is speculation at this point so I can’t find a trailer to share with you. Even the movie images available are not very telling. But I’m sure as we get closer we’ll learn more!

Incredibles 2

June 15th, 2018

They’re back! Everyone’s favorite family of superheroes is back in Incredibles 2 – but this time Helen is in the spotlight, leaving Bob at home with Violet and Dash to navigate the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life. It’s a tough transition for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack’s emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone must find a way to work together again — which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible.

Now, a whole new generation will get to fall in love with the Incredibles! It’s been 14 years since the first movie was released in 2004.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

July 6th, 2018

This is the sequel to Ant-Man and takes place shortly after Captian America: Civil War.  In the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) is left facing the consequences of his actions as both a superhero and a father. When he’s confronted by Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) with an urgent new mission, Scott must once again put on his Ant-Man suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp. As the team works together, they’ll uncover secrets from their past.

Christopher Robin

August 3rd, 2018

This one could be interesting to see who it draws in. Christopher Robin has grown up, he had a family. Needless to say, it’s been decades since he’s been to the hundred acres forest. But he goes back and encounters his childhood friend Winnie-the-Pooh, who helps him to rediscover the joys of life.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

November 2nd, 2018

We saw the preview for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms this weekend and it looked amazing. At first, Peyton heard the music and said no way am I watching that. No one ever talks in the Nutcracker. Then when the trailer was over she was asking if we could see it.  It’s a twist on the traditional Nutcracker story but one I think you’ll enjoy.

All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift from her late mother. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) Christmas party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

November 21st, 2018

Taking place six years after the events of Wreck-It Ralph, the Sugar Rush arcade cabinet has broken, forcing Ralph and Vanellope to travel to the Internet via the newly-installed Wi-Fi router in Litwak’s Arcade to retrieve the piece capable of saving the game.

Mary Poppins Returns

December 25th, 2018

Oh, I do hope they move this one up a day or two so we can see it on Christmas Eve! There’s going to be a little time jump of about 20 years since the last Mary Poppins movie and we’ll catch up with Mary Poppins in Depression-era London. A now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

I know there were a few rumors of additional Disney movies coming out, like Mulan for instance. But I didn’t find a release date for those, yet. But I’ll keep you posted if I hear of any more Disney movies hitting theaters in 2018!
