10 Secrets of Being a Lady by Sheba Matheu is a touching story of a mother imparting wisdom to her young daughter. There are 2 characters in 10 Secrets of Being a Lady, the mother and the daughter – young Ava. I would say Ava is elementary age, maybe a 1st grader. She’s fun, spunky and full of life. I instantly had the impression that the mother and Ava had a special bond and spent a fair amount of time together. It reminded me of Peyton and myself. Peyton is a 1st grader and we spend a lot of time together.
Because I spend so much time with Peyton I am always teaching her manners. I remind her to say please and thank you, to open doors for others and thank them when doors are opened for her. I am forever instilling manners and value on Peyton.
In 10 Secrets of Being a Lady, we meet up with Ava and her mother. They are spending time in their library and the mother has decided it is time to start imparting the wisdom and knowledge on Ava, the family secrets. The mother wants to help Ava understand the qualities and manners a lady possess.
Ava listened as each secret was read to her. Then, she thought about how that secret applied to her everyday life. At times she could see where she was close at implementing the secret but it needed a little more work. I found each secret to be universal, meaning these are qualities that all our young daughters should try to incorporate into their lives.
I think it’s touching how Ava’s mother decided to teach her some of the qualities a young lady needs. I think it’s a nice way to help your child grow up and mature while still letting them be little. And making it special so they feel like they’ve been let into an elite club. All kids love secrets! And all kids like to feel special. 10 Secrets of Being a Lady does just that. It makes little girls feel special and like they’ve been let in on the secret.
