It’s the holidays! More likely than not, you will be having family and friends over to celebrate over the next few weeks. I know in our home, once Halloween hits it feels like a constant parade of people in and out of our home. I also know what it is like to have septic system issues during the holidays as well. Nobody wants that. So today, I’m going to share some tips on how to avoid septic system issues with the help of Roto-Rooter.
Pump Your Septic System Regularly
In our town, you are required to pump out your septic system every three years at a minimum. Now, if you have a large family you may want to do this more frequently. Since we have a medium size family but we have many pets which mean lots and lots of laundry plus we frequently entertain I tend to have our septic system serviced every other year.
Check Your Pumps and Alarms
Just like the batteries in your smoke detectors you should be checking the pumps and alarms on your septic system. Make sure the sump pump hasn’t been knocked loose or mistakenly unplugged. Also, check to make sure the alarm is on and working. I can verify that the alarm will make the difference of your septic system backflowing or not.
Two years ago, our septic system froze solid. It was a bitterly cold winter without much snow coverage, very unusual for the Midwest. This caused our septic lines to freeze going out to the drain field. If our alarm had not been in working order, we would have burnt out our septic pump and backflow into the house. But because the alarm went off, I was able to call our plumber and have the issues remedied before any damage was done.
Use a Septic System Treatment Regularly
I use a septic system treatment monthly to ensure we do not have excess buildup. I really like the Roto-Rooter Septic Tank Treatment because it comes in a single-use container making it easy to remember to do on the first of each month. I usually buy a year’s worth at a time and mark the month on the bottle so I can be sure to never miss a treatment. Plus, it’s extremely simple to use. Pour the contents of the bottle in the toilet and flush, that’s it. While it may seem simple to you and I there is a lot that is going into that process.
The Roto-Rooter Septic Tank Treatment is filled with two times more natural enzymes than the other leading brand. What that means to you and I is that we have two times the power working towards breaking down the paper, fats, oils, grease, protein, and starch. Those are what cause the build-up and lead to backups if left unchecked. It helps to eliminate odors and dampness in your drainage field. Seeing as how our septic system and drainage field are so close to the house I really appreciate this.
Routine Maintenance
Every spring and fall we walk around the septic system and through our drainage field. Why? We are looking to make sure there are no issues like cracked pipes, huge holes dug by animals, ect to the system. Remember when I told you about our field freezing? Well, part of it was due to soil erosion. Our drainage field is not typical as it goes UP a hill. We’ve had the system for 10 years and over those 10 years soil has rolled down the hill causing the pipes to be closer to the surface. This past summer, we had the joy of digging up our field pipes and having them reburied deeper in the ground. This should eliminate our system from freezing going forward. But it’s something you need to think about. Also, check those pipes that stick out of the ground. Our lawn service had hit one and cracked it pretty good. We had it replaced but had it gone unfixed it could’ve caused damage to our system and lead to exposing our system to the eliminated letting in dirt and debris that the system could not handle.
Bottom line is having a septic system has its perks and drawbacks. Perk – no monthly bill from the country. Drawback – You do have to maintain and be aware of the health of your septic system. But with the addition of Roto-Rooter Septic Tank Treatment to your routine, it will help keep your septic system healthy and stressfree.
