Working from home can take a toll on your balance between work and family time. As your computer and notes are at an arm’s reach away, it can be difficult to truly switch off. Therefore, it is important to create a distinct line between work and personal life when you are working from home. If you need some advice, keep reading.
Have a separate workspace
Using a study desk as opposed to your kitchen counter will enable you to focus properly. Plus, it gives you a specific line between work and leisure. You can work as you would in an office and switch off at the end of the day to enjoy some downtime. Many of those that work from home find it difficult to switch off. However, with a dedicated setup, you can separate your work life from your personal life.
If you do not have room for an entire work setup, then make sure to pack your things away at a set time so that you aren’t easily encouraged to start working in the evenings when you should be relaxing.
Set a schedule
When you work from home, it is very important to set a schedule. When you work in an office, the dedicated hours provided by your company set the schedule for you. Thus, when you work from home you are responsible for how long you work. You will likely be requested to work during certain hours if you work for a company still. However, it can be easy to overwork because you are in the comfort of your own home and surrounded by your work stuff.
Be strict with your schedule otherwise, you will easily give in to work commitments when you should be spending time with yourself or your family. Set a time (with an alarm) each day so that you finish work and get time to relax.
Get up earlier
If you find that you often work too late because you work less productively at home, then you should try working in a separate space. Yet, if nothing works then you might want to consider getting up earlier.
The time in the evening might be needed to care for your family. Thus, you will want to finish at a reasonable time. The extra time you need could therefore be fulfilled in the morning if you get up an hour earlier than usual.
Make time for breaks
When you work in an office, you will likely take plenty of breaks due to socializing and lunches. You might not have this same experience at home. Therefore, ensure to make time for breaks.
If you need to, then set an alarm for every two or three hours so that you get up from your work spot, stretch, make a drink, and whatever else you need to reset and avoid burnout.
Instead of letting working from home get the best of you, use these tips to ensure that you get plenty of downtime and relax.
