Wow! That was a read! Best Day Ever by Kaira Rouda is a psychological suspense thriller that will keep you reading from start to finish. While it does have a slow start, it’s setting the stage and drawing you in. But once you’re hooked you won’t want to put this book down.
Our main character is Paul Strom, the story is told from his point of view. Just from reading the back cover I thought Paul sounded like a controlling ass that painted a perfect picture for the world to see but was not so nice to his wife at home. And I hit it right on the head! But there’s more to it than I ever suspected.
The whole story is played out over 24 hours, it’s a Friday and Paul has taken off work to take his wife Mia to their Lake home for a little alone time. It’s been a long while since they’ve spent time together without the kids. Paul went out of his way to be helpful this morning so that Mia could get ready for the trip. And Paul let us know that this was not his normal routine, that he can be nice and help out around the house when he wants to but that Mia better not get used to this. That just struck me wrong. That was one of the first hints that life was not all rainbows and sunshine in the marriage.
Even on the drive up to the lake home, you could tell things were off. Paul made sure to let us all know that he normally doesn’t stop for bathroom breaks but because today is special he would make an exception without shaming Mia. What the heck? Who shames another person for having to use the restroom?
As the day went on the craziness ensued and got dark and twisted. It really is a story you won’t want to put down. And when you are finished reading it the first time, yes I said first time, you’ll go back reread parts so you can get clarity on things you may have missed the first time around.
