Peyton only recently saw Coco, we were lucky to catch it on its final weekend in theaters. Life is just always so crazy around the holidays. But I’m glad I was able to take her and see it. She instantly fell in love with Dante and Miguel. The music was a major hit too. And all those colors! Peyton couldn’t get enough of the movie and is super excited for it to be released tomorrow. I’m sure I’ll be at Target, first thing, 8 am picking up a copy of the film for her. I’ve already rented it a few times on demand so she could watch it.
So this weekend, while we were watching Coco I decided to make a big day of it. We were snowed in and really couldn’t go anywhere. The house was getting a little restless. That’s when I decided to rent Coco (again) and make a day of it. We made Coco inspired tie-dye cupcakes with sugar skull toppers and tacos. Then we ate and enjoyed the movie. Peyton loved it!
I know Peyton loved Coco because of the music, Dante, Miguel and the bright colors. All that singing and dancing had her sucked right in. But I loved Coco for the message it sent. Family. Family is a huge part of Coco, it’s what made Coco. Multiple generations living and working together in the family business, the oldest female led the family. And everyone worked together!
I really appreciated how it showed the multiple generations caring for one another and how even after they’ve passed on we still hold them in our memories and cherish the family stories, that’s what keeps them alive for the living. And it’s true. The younger generation won’t know much about the great and great-greats and great great great grandparents if we don’t honor and celebrate them.
Coco really is about family and I love having a movie like that playing nonstop on a winter day. So today, Peyton and I made tacos together. This was a dish I learned how to make from my stepdad, he’s no longer with us so while we made the taco I told Peyton of how this was the first dish I learned how to make and how her Papa taught me how to make it. He passed away shortly before Peyton’s 2nd birthday so she doesn’t have many memories of him but she loves hearing about him.
Then we made some cupcakes too. I wanted the day to be festive and fun so I pulled out the bright colors and we made tie-dyed cupcakes. Then we headed to the computer and went searching for some printable cupcake toppers. By the end of the day we had some tasty treats, a great dinner and made some memories.
If you want to create your own Coco inspired cupcakes you can! We shared some tips and tricks on how to make them. Plus we also shared our Taco recipe that was taught to me.
