Brunhilda was a naughty witch! Every day when she rolled out of bed she ate spider mush! Brushed her teeth with candy and gazed in the mirror at all her warts. She liked to fly into town and cause trouble for everyone. She would make ice cream fall off the cone! She would make children fall off their bikes! She took pleasure and happiness from other’s misfortune.
Her black cat was not liking Brunhilda’s behavior. So one night he decided to mix up a little potion of his own! The next day, Brunhilda was really going to be in for a treat. Everything would be opposite!
When Brunhilda woke up she couldn’t find her spider mush or candy to brush her teeth. She had to settle for oatmeal and brushing her teeth with toothpaste! When she looked in the mirror, there were no warts! What was going on?? She headed into town to cause some trouble, that always cheers her up.
Brunhilda saw a little boy eating ice cream! She knew what she had to do. So, Brunhilda said her spell but instead of the ice cream falling off the cone more ice cream appeared! The little boy was so happy he gave Brunhilda a high five. Next, she came across a group of little girls riding their bikes. Oh, this was her next favorite thing to do! But instead of the little girls falling off their bikes, they started to fly! The girls all cheered as they flew through the air.
Brunhilda was confused, why was her spell doing the opposite of what she wanted? What was going on? As Brunhilda pondered this she came across a park full of families playing and having a good time. She decided to try the spell backward and see what happens. It worked! The playground disappeared and all the kids were sad. Normally, this would’ve made Brunhilda so very happy.
Normally, this would’ve made Brunhilda so very happy. But she’s had a taste of what it’s like to be good, she’s heard the cheers and been given high fives. Those felt much better than what she was feeling now. So, Brunhilda went back to the park and said the spell again, this time the normal way. And a huge festival appeared!
That night, Brunhilda went home and decided to make a few changes. The next morning when she woke her warts were back, she had spider mush and brushed her teeth with candy. But she decided to do good things with her magic.
We really enjoyed the story of Brunhilda’s Backwards Day by Shawna J.C. Teeny. There’s an important lesson to be learned. When you are nice to people it feels better than being mean. The illustrations are vibrant and entertaining. Peyton loved looking through the book before we even started to read it.
You can find Brunhilda’s Backwards Day at your local bookstore or online.
