Finn and Puss by Robert Vescio is a touching story about a little boy, Finn, that is so very lonely. Puss is an adorable, friendly and lost cat. Both are looking for something and on their search, they find each other.
Finn and Puss take to each rather instantly. Finn loves having someone to hang out with and he doesn’t feel alone any longer and Puss now has someone to care for her and look after her. Then, Finn sees the lost cat poster of Puss. Puss’s owner is looking for her.
Oh, what will Finn do? It’s such a hard choice. He knows Puss’s owner is sad and wants Puss back but at the same time, Puss has brought so much happiness into Finn’s life.
Finn and Puss is a great book for children. Geared towards ages 4-7 years old with lots of illustrations by Mellisa Mackie the book is perfect for those in pre-k to 2nd grade.
I like Finn and Puss because it helps kids identify and talk about their feelings. It also gets children to talk about what is the right thing to do even when they really do not want to do the right thing. I know, if I was Finn, I’d have a hard time giving Puss back to her owner.
Finn and Puss can also be used as a teaching tool for littles to consider other’s feelings. At the beginning of the book, you see other children ignore Finn, adding to his loneliness. This book can be used to help kids recognize when someone is feeling left out and how to include them.
Robert Vescio was able to tell a powerful story filled with teaching points in just 80 words. This is a wonderful book to read to young ones and then have them read it to you when they get a little older.
