While I’m on my weight loss journey I’m looking for ways to enjoy my favorite foods but without all the empty or excess calories. And I’ve found a way to satisfy my burger craving without killing my calorie intake for the day. Nutrisystem encourages you to eat out, attend events and eat food other than Nutrisystem. They encourage you to take this time to learn about portion control, about those little changes in what you put on or in your food that have large calorie impacts and how to navigate and live a healthier lifestyle. Finding healthy alternatives to my favorite foods is one way I’m learning how to live a healthier lifestyle.
For this recipe you’ll need –
Ground Turkey
1 can Green Chilis (drained)
Cilantro (optional)
Table Onions (sliced)
Thinly sliced Jalapeno Jack Cheese (optional)
I feel this comes out nicer on the grill but you can also pan fry them or broil your burgers. Whichever you prefer. Just remember to keep an eye on them, it’s not like cooking a beef burger. Turkey can dry out and get tough so you need to make sure they are cooked but not overly cooked. If you are unsure, use a meat thermometer and when the internal temp of your burger is 165 you are good.
This is pretty much a dump and mix recipe. Place your ground turkey (I used 2 lbs in this recipe), green chilis, table onions and cilantro in the bowl and mix until well combined. If it’s runny then you’ll need to add more turkey. I always start with one pound and add more if I need to. But I always end up using 2 lbs to get the consistency I like.
Next, make them into 3-4 ounce patties. If you don’t have a food scale make them about the size of the palm of your hand or deck of cards. This is the size of one meat portion.
Fire up your grill and let it get to about 400. Then turn the heat to low and place your burgers on. I let them go for 3-5 minutes on each side. If you have a grill with a large grate you may want to put down some tinfoil or grill mats before you turn it one. The burgers are somewhat small and can fall through some grill grates.
If you are doing the cheese, remember to use the thinly sliced it’s a lot less calories and you’ll only need half a slice per burger, place it on the last minute to melt.
It’s that’s simple to have a yummy turkey burger in just a few seconds!
I did not use Cilantro this time because we were out. But it does give it a little different flavor. So feel free to experiment with your ratio or onions, chilis and cilantro. It will change the flavor of the burger.
