How To Look After Your Eyes When You Use Screens All Day

Most of us spend a significant portion of our day in front of screens, whether it’s for work, entertainment, or staying connected with others. While this constant screen time is often unavoidable, it can take a toll on our eyes. Symptoms like dryness, blurred vision, headaches, and even neck pain are common signs of digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome.

To protect your eye health and maintain comfort throughout your day, here are practical tips on how to look after your eyes when you use screens for extended periods.

Follow the 20-20-20 Rule

The 20-20-20 rule is simple but highly effective. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This helps your eye muscles relax and reduces strain. Set a timer or use screen break reminder apps to keep yourself consistent.

Adjust Your Screen Setup

Your screen’s position matters. It should be about an arm’s length away from your eyes, and the top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level. This setup helps you maintain a more natural head and neck position while keeping your eyes from straining upward or downward.

Reduce Glare and Increase Contrast

Glare from lights or reflections can make it harder for your eyes to focus. Use an anti-glare screen filter and position your screen to avoid reflections from windows and overhead lights. Adjust your screen’s brightness and contrast to comfortable levels. Both excessive brightness and low contrast can cause eye discomfort.

Blink More Often

Staring at screens causes us to blink less often, sometimes up to 60% less than normal. Blinking is essential for keeping your eyes moist and preventing dryness and irritation. Make a conscious effort to blink regularly, especially during intense focus sessions.

Use Artificial Tears

If you suffer from dry eyes despite blinking more often, consider using lubricating eye drops (also known as artificial tears). These can be especially helpful in air-conditioned environments or during long screen sessions.

Wear the Right Glasses

If you wear glasses, make sure your prescription is up to date. Even a slight vision imbalance can cause eye fatigue. More importantly, consider investing in computer glasses for women or men if you use screens for long periods. These are specially designed to reduce glare and block blue light, which can contribute to eye strain and disrupt sleep patterns.

Adjust Display Settings and Use Dark Mode

Modern devices offer various display settings that can be customized to reduce strain. Increasing text size, enabling dark mode, and using night shift or blue light filter features in the evening can significantly reduce eye fatigue and improve comfort.

Get Regular Eye Exams

Routine eye check-ups are essential, especially if you spend long hours in front of screens. Your optometrist can detect early signs of digital eye strain or other underlying issues and recommend appropriate solutions.

Conclusion

Your eyes work hard for you every day. It’s important to care for them properly. By incorporating these habits into your daily routine, you can reduce discomfort and protect your long-term eye health. Whether it’s following the 20-20-20 rule or choosing the right eyewear like computer glasses, small changes can make a big difference in how your eyes feel and function.
