Lowdown on the Season 2 Premier of New Amsterdam

We’ve been waiting all summer for this, the season 2 premiere of New Amersterdam. What happened after the catastrophic ambulance crash? With so many key characters involved and rumors that there are 2 people not making it out alive fans are on pins and needles waiting to see how it all shakes out. I know I am anxiously waiting to see what happens. But before I watched the premiere I made a few predictions.

So we know in the ambulance that crashed there were 2 paramedics, Sharpe, Bloom, Georgia, Luna and Max. 3 of those characters are major players in the show. 2 are background characters we have no investment in. 1 is baby Luna that was just born. And lastly, Georgia whose been a background character for the first season as Max’s wife. Logically, I would think they would let an ambulance driver and either Georgia or Luna not make it through the tragedy.  There is too much of a storyline left for the major characters, but I also would not put it past the writers to let Sharpe or Bloom not make it. Max I am confident is safe. He’s the main character! There would be no show without Max.

The premiere was different than other episodes. We open up, 5 months in the future with Max getting up to care for baby Luna. We hear and see Georgia in bed saying it’s your turn and Max replies – It’s always my turn. So first thought is – Oh my goodness! Georgia, Luna and Max all made it through! They get to be the happy family! But it feels a little too good to be true.

Fast forward, now we are at New Amsterdam and Max is going through his day. He’s working, seeing patients and dealing with issues that are arising. Throughout his day, as he walks into certain areas of the hospital we see flashbacks to the day of the tragedy.  Through the flashbacks, we see who did not make it, yes one was an ambulance driver, and who made it.

There is a lot of residual pain the characters are working through. We see them struggling with loss, struggling with pain from the injuries they sustained during the accident and are still healing from, and seeing what the new normal is becoming for them.  New Amsterdam is not the same hospital we came to know in season one.

Max is still fighting with hospital bureaucracy and injustices affecting the patients. He’s going up against big pharma and fighting them to do what’s right and humane. Max is still fighting his cancer and is working with a new doctor. He is still our hero.

SPOILER ALERT

If you do not want to know who dies do not read further

We learn that Bloom and Sharpe are friends again and supporting each other through the aftermath. And in the very last scene of the episode, we learn that it is Georgia who does not make it through. We see the flashback to Max being told to hury, she’s not going to make it. We watch as Max runs through the hospital and arrives at the operating room too late and see Georgia’s lifeless body there. Now, Max is a single father, raising a newborn and fighting cancer while trying to change the way hospitals and big pharma treat patients.

Season 2 is going to be different. I think we are going to see much more heartfelt moments as Max dives into fatherhood. We are going to see the personal pain and struggles of everyone as their storylines evolve and change. See heartbreak, love, friendships grow and change. But I highly suggest this is the year you will need to have a box of tissues nearby.

So set your DVRs or clear your Tuesday nights and watch New Amsterdam.
