I know we are in summer. So talking about turkeys and fall may seem a little premature. But summer is coming to an end. Peyton starts school in three weeks! The fair is starting soon. Which means, fall is right around the corner. One Big Turkey by Anne Vittur Kennedy lets us follow the adventures of One Big Turkey and all his silly friends as Thanksgiving draws near.
One Big Turkey is in board book shape format, which I love for little ones. The book is cut out in a shape of a giant turkey! Each page is filled with colorful, engaging illustrations of one big turkey and his friends in the forest.
It’s also a counting book! On the first page, we start with one squirrel playing in the leaves that have fallen. Then when we flip to the next page we get 2 deer looking for something to eat. Your little one will see how to count to 10 by the end of the book. With each page turn, we learn a new number and meet a new forest friend that’s joining One Big Turkey on his adventure. I like how each number is reinforced. For example, with the number 5 one page talks about 5 apples and the next page talks about 5 geese. Repetition is always best when teaching a new skill.
By the time we get to the end of the book, One Big Turkey has found all his forest friends and the have enjoyed a marvelous Thanksgiving Day feast. Now they are all settling in for good nights sleep.
One Big Turkey is a cute story for preschoolers. Not only will it help get your little excited about Thanksgiving Day but it will also entertain and teach your child about numbers along the way.
You can find One Big Turkey on Amazon or your local book retailer starting August 9th.
