In our home, we give the gift of book year round. I am always looking for new authors, stories and genres to share with Peyton to help foster her love of reading. Most books teach a lesson by showing a child how to handle a situation or express their feelings or helping them figure out what is the right thing to do in at a difficult time. Scaredy Book by Devon Sillett and Cara Kind aims to encourage kids to leave their comfort zones and how to deal with those feelings of anxiety or fear.
The main star of Scaredy Book is Book. Book lives at the library but desperately wants to get out and see the world, he longs to go outside. But he’s afraid of what might happen out there or what it will be like. One of his pages could get torn, he could get mud on him or get lost and never return to the library!
Then there’s Emma, a little girl that LOVES visiting the library and checking out all the books. When Emma comes across Book it seems to be fate. They can both help each other. Emma can help Book with his fear of leaving the library and Book can take Emma on a new adventure. They both are out of their comfort zones and they learn to cope and process the new experiences. They discover that it really wasn’t as scary as they thought if you just take it one step at a time.
This is a great book for children and parents to remind ourselves that we should try new things, go to new places and get out of our comfort zone. After the reading the story to your child it’s a great time to talk about being brave, taking risks and living to tell about your adventure to all those that will listen.
You can purchase your own copy of Scaredy Book online or at your local bookstore.
