Every year when we go to the Minnesota State Fair we search out the new foods. It’s a tradition for our family. Well, when Peyton was younger, probably 4, she was still in a stroller so I know she was pretty little, LeAnn Chins was at the Minnesota State Fair. They are one of my favorite casual fast food places in the twin cities. Well, this year they were doing the Great Minnesota Get Together and brought their famous wontons and they had Banana Foster Wontons too! I could not wait to try them!! They did not disappoint. The bananas were tender and the caramel sauce melted in your mouth. I think about these wontons every time the state fair rolls around. But, they were only at the fair the one year. So, this year I decided to make them myself!
I will say, these were extremely easy to make. I made them in less than 15 minutes and everyone ate them in less than 5 minutes. They’ve already been requested again. But this time I was asked to make ice cream to go with them. So, maybe in the future, I’ll do another recipe post featuring these delicious banana foster wontons with homemade ice cream. But you’ll have to wait and see.
To make these Banana Foster Wontons at home you will need the following –
Wonton Wrappers
Banana
Caramel Sauce
Egg White
Vegetable, Canola or Peanut oil for frying
One banana made about a dozen wontons. You are only putting 2-3 slices in each wrapper so the banana goes far.
Slice your banana in 1/4 inch thick slices. If you have a large banana you may need to cut those slices in half too.
Take the egg white and whip it a little. You are going to use this to seal your wontons.
Lay your wonton out flat, place a dollop of caramel sauce in the center.
Place a few slices of banana on top of the caramel sauce.
Brush a little egg wash on the outer edges of the wonton wrapper.
Fold the wonton wrapper corner to corner like a triangle and press the edges together to make a seal. You want to make sure your wonton wrapper is sealed otherwise your caramel sauce is going to leak into the oil.
Either use a deep fryer or large pot for the deep frying. I used a deep fryer because I have one and I can set the temperature on it and forget about it. But if you are using a pot you are also going to need a candy thermometer. You want to heat the oil to 350.
Pour your desired oil in the fryer and set the temperature for 350.
Once the oil is heated, place 2-3 wontons in the hot oil. You don’t want to put too many in the pan at once because they will fuse together and lower the temperature of the oil.
You are going to let the wontons cook for about 20-40 seconds per side until they are golden brown.
Remove the wonton from the hot oil and place on some paper towels to absorb the excess oil.
Sprinkle with powder sugar and serve!
You could also sever with some warm caramel sauce for dipping if you desire.
These are delicious! A very light and warm dessert.
