Why You’ll Love This Deep Fried Cookie Dough Recipe

  • Inspired by the Minnesota State Fair
  • Uses only 3 simple ingredients
  • Quick and beginner-friendly
  • Crispy outside with a soft cookie dough center
  • Perfect for parties and game days
  • Easy to customize with different cookie dough flavors
  • Restaurant-quality dessert at home

Ingredients

To make Deep Fried Cookie Dough, you’ll need:

  • Premade edible cookie dough (any flavor)
  • Refrigerated biscuit dough
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Optional Toppings

  • Powdered sugar
  • Chocolate sauce
  • Caramel sauce
  • Whipped cream
  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Rainbow sprinkles

Equipment You’ll Need

  • Deep fryer or heavy Dutch oven
  • Candy thermometer (if frying on the stove)
  • Slotted spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Rolling pin

How to Make Deep Fried Cookie Dough

Step 1: Heat the Oil

Fill your deep fryer or heavy pot with vegetable oil.

Heat the oil to 375°F.

Maintaining the correct oil temperature helps create a crispy exterior while preventing greasy dough.

Step 2: Roll the Cookie Dough

Roll the edible cookie dough into 1-inch balls.

Place them on a plate while you prepare the biscuit dough.

Step 3: Prepare the Biscuit Dough

Separate the refrigerated biscuits.

Cut each biscuit into four equal pieces.

Using a rolling pin, flatten each piece into a small circle.

Step 4: Wrap the Cookie Dough

Place one cookie dough ball in the center of each flattened biscuit.

Wrap the dough completely around the cookie dough.

Pinch all of the seams tightly closed.

Roll gently between your hands until smooth.

Be sure there are no openings where the cookie dough is exposed.

Step 5: Fry

Carefully lower a few dough balls into the hot oil.

Do not overcrowd the fryer.

Cook for approximately 1–2 minutes per side, turning occasionally until all sides are evenly golden brown.

Step 6: Drain

Remove the fried cookie dough with a slotted spoon.

Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

Step 7: Finish and Serve

Dust generously with powdered sugar.

Serve immediately while the centers are warm and soft.

Tips for Perfect Deep Fried Cookie Dough

  • Seal the biscuit dough completely to prevent leaks.
  • Fry in small batches to maintain oil temperature.
  • Don’t overcook or the cookie dough center may become firm.
  • Use edible cookie dough rather than raw cookie dough.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture.

Flavor Variations

This recipe is easy to customize using different edible cookie dough flavors:

  • Chocolate Chip
  • Double Chocolate
  • Peanut Butter
  • Cookies and Cream
  • Birthday Cake
  • Sugar Cookie
  • Brownie Batter
  • Chocolate Mint

You can also drizzle them with melted chocolate, caramel, or raspberry sauce for an extra indulgent dessert.

Serve these deep fried cookie dough bites with:

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Chocolate ice cream
  • Hot fudge sauce
  • Caramel sauce

Storage

Deep Fried Cookie Dough is best enjoyed fresh and warm.

If you have leftovers, refrigerate them in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Reheat in an air fryer or 350°F oven for 5–7 minutes to help restore the crispy exterior.

Avoid microwaving, as it softens the fried coating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use homemade edible cookie dough?

Absolutely! Homemade edible cookie dough works wonderfully as long as it’s safe to eat without baking.

Why should I use edible cookie dough?

Edible cookie dough is made without raw eggs and typically uses heat-treated flour, making it safe to enjoy even if the center isn’t fully baked.

Can I make these in an air fryer?

You can, but the texture won’t be quite the same. Deep frying creates the classic crispy State Fair exterior.

Can I freeze them?

They’re best served fresh, but you can freeze the assembled (unfried) dough balls and fry them directly from frozen by adding an extra minute or two to the cooking time.
