Funnel cakes are pretty much a staple of any fair or amusement park. And ever since I made the first funnel cake for the kids a few weeks ago they have been begging for more. Peyton’s favorite type of dessert is red velvet anything so I decided to make her a red velvet funnel cake and see what she thought.
To make this red velvet funnel cake at home you will need the following –
1 1/2 C Buttermilk
2 Eggs
2 C Flour
1 tsp Baking Powder
2 TBSP Sugar
1/2 tsp Salt
2 tbsp Cocoa Powder
1/2 tbsp Vinegar
Red Food Coloring
Oil
Deep Fryer or Large Pot
First, set up your deep fryer area. Take a large plate and line it with paper towels. Pour the oil into your pot or deep fryer. Start heating the oil to 375.
Next, in a large bowl, combine the milk and eggs. You want to whisk or beat them together.
In another large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and cocoa powder. Stir until well combined.
Add the flour mixture to your egg mixture and stir until well combined. You’ll want a smooth mixture so be sure to beat any lumps out.
Add the vinegar and mix well.
Next, add in the food coloring. It will take a fair amount of food coloring to change this red. You can use as little or as much or even skip this step if you would like.
Pour the batter into a bottle. I have this set and it works amazing for funnel cakes. You can also use it for pancakes or other recipes that require a controlled pour of batter.
Once your oil is heated it’s time to make red velvet funnel cakes!
Pour the batter into the hot oil in a circular motion.
Fry the funnel cake for 1-2 minutes then take a set of tongs to carefully flip the funnel cake and fry for another 1-2 minutes.
Use your tongs again to remove the funnel cake from the oil and place on the paper towels. Let the funnel cake sit on the towels for a few minutes for the excess oil to run off.
Then, plate your funnel cake! Sprinkle with powdered sugar and enjoy.
You can also make a cream cheese frosting to dip the funnel cake in too. The cream cheese frosting recipe from our carrot cake recipe would be perfect!
Be sure to check back daily as we will be posting a new Minnesota State Fair inspired recipe everyday this month!
