Are you looking for something to watch this weekend? You should check out A United Kingdom, which happens to be out on Blu-Ray and DVD now. It’s available online or at your local retailer.
A United Kingdom is based in the 1940s and is about a forbidden love story between the Botswana King and a white English woman. This was still tabu at the time in South Africa. Apartheid was just being introduced in South Africa when they decided to get married. Their marriage created an international uproar that was heard worldwide. But they didn’t let it dampen their love for one another. They overcame every obstacle in their way and helped to change South African history with their love.
David Oweloyo plays the King of Botswana, you’ll recognize him from his role in Selma. Rosamund Pike plays the white English woman who falls in love with the King, you’ll recognize her from Gone Girl.
This is a wonderful film for family movie night, it showcases how 2 people fell in love and didn’t let anything stop them. It’s also a great movie to watch and discuss with your children about how segregation and discrimination still exist today and what we can do to help eliminate it.
The film runs 111 minutes or close to 2 hours and is rated PG-13.
There are a few bonus features too –
