Camp Warner Bros Week 2: Steven Universe: The Movie

We are on week 2 of Camp Warner Bros.! Are you all having fun?? Peyton really enjoyed tie-dying those shirts last week! This week we are going to be watching Steven Universe: The Movie and making a special treat! We are going to be making Steven Universe Gem Candy!

This is a science experiment that pays off in a yummy treat.

You will need the following to make your own Steven Universe Gem Candy –

Mason Jar
Pencil or Stick
String
Sugar
Water
Food Coloring
Flavor(optional)

This project does require adult help. This is not the type of project you can leave the kids to do on their own because we will need hot water.

First, take your mason jar and wash it. You are going to be using this to grow your crystals.

Next, take a pan and fill it with 1 C water. Heat on high until it comes to a simmer. Add in 1 C of sugar and stir until dissolved, repeat this 2 more times. You will have added 3 C of sugar to the water.

Pour the mixture into your mason jar. This is when you can add the food coloring and flavor.

Cut a string the length of the mason jar. You are going to tie the string to your stick or pencil. Then tie a lifesaver candy to the other end. This will help keep the string down.

Place the string to the mason jar with the pencil resting across the top.

Now it’s time to wait. As the water evaporates the sugar crystals will cling to the string.  Then you’ll have Steven Universe Gem Candy!

Each recipe will make one mason jar.

The Science Behind The Fun:

As time passes (and the solution cools), the water will slowly evaporate from the solution. As the water evaporates, the solution will become more saturated with sugar. The sugar molecules will collect on the string, and the candy crystals will grow molecule by molecule!

Extra Science Fun:

Try making two jars of candy. In the first jar – seed your “Crystal Gem” Candy by rolling your string in water and sugar. In the second jar do not seed your string with sugar before growing. Determine if using seed sugar crystals changes the growth rate of your “Crystal Gem” Candy!

Steven Universe: The Movie is the inspiration behind this tasty little treat. While you are waiting for your crystal gem candy to grow you can watch Steven Universe: The Movie as a family. This movie is a musical so be prepared for your littles to be moving around!

Steven Universe: The Movie is now available to own on Digital, Blu-ray & DVD
