The Dragon of the Month Club

November 30, 2015 By Shanna 1 Comment

To inspire the love of reading in a child is truly a beautiful thing. But as kids get older there are so many distractions! There’s homework, sports, friends, movies and so much more. And getting them to read can become a challenge. Now is the time to find a fascinating book that keep them engaged. The Dragon of the Month Club written by Iain Reading is a book that will do just that.

Ayana Fall had recently moved from Vancouver to the small town of Medicine Hat, Alberta. She had no friends. For some reason the popular girl in school, Heather van der Sloot, had taken a disliking to her and set out to make Ayana’s life miserable. Heather tormented Ayana every chance she got. One day Heather took it to far. She and her groupies followed Ayana after school and gave her a hard time. Heather took Ayana’s idea book and tossed it into the river. This caused much heart ache for Ayana. She took off looking for solitude so she could compose herself and ended up in the back of the library crying it all out.

Tyler Travers was from Medicine Hat and attended a different school. He came across Ayana crying in the library. That’s how they met. Soon Ayana and Tyler became best of friends. They would meet every day after school and hang out. Then one day, Ayana and Tyler were in the library. Ayana was crying because Heather had taken all her poems and tossed them around the playground. Tyler was attempting to console her when a book fell off the top shelf. How to Conjure Your Very Own Dragon in Six Easy Steps.

Tyler and Ayana were drawn to the book and just had to take it home to try it out. And that’s where the adventures really began. I don’t want to spoil the whole book for you  but if you have a child that enjoys the magical aspects and thrills in book than this is a winner. And what’s really nice is this in the first book in a series of books. There will be more coming!

The Dragon of the Month Club is a very enjoyable read. I’m a grown adult and I enjoyed it. It reminded me a Harry Potter meets Goosebumps (the part were the books come alive) meets Sherlock Homes. I found the book to be engaging and kept me wanting to read on. This is a wonderful series for any young reader.
