Easy Turkey and Cheese Pinwheels for Kids

Easy Turkey and Cheese Pinwheels for Kids

If you’re looking for a simple way to make sandwiches more exciting, turkey and cheese pinwheels are a great option. They’re easy to prepare, fun to eat, and fit perfectly inside a bento box. Best of all, they come together in about 10 minutes, making them ideal for busy school mornings.

This lunch pairs turkey and cheese pinwheels with fresh cherries, yogurt, crunchy crackers, and a small sweet treat for a balanced meal kids will actually look forward to eating.

Turkey and Cheese Pinwheels

The star of today’s lunch is a batch of simple turkey and cheese pinwheels.

To make them, I spread thinly sliced turkey and Colby Jack cheese onto a soft tortilla before rolling it tightly into a log. Once rolled, I sliced it into bite-sized pinwheels that fit perfectly inside the lunchbox.

For this lunch I used a gluten-free tortilla, but any soft tortilla works well, including:

  • Whole wheat tortillas
  • Flour tortillas
  • Spinach wraps
  • Gluten-free wraps
  • Low-carb tortillas

The key is choosing a tortilla that rolls easily without tearing.

Fresh Cherries

Fresh cherries make a sweet and colorful side.

To make lunchtime easier, I remove the pits before packing them. It saves time at lunch and makes the fruit easier for younger kids to enjoy.

Other fruits that pair well include:

  • Strawberries
  • Grapes
  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • Mandarin oranges

Yogurt

A yogurt cup adds calcium and protein while helping round out the meal.

Today’s lunch includes strawberry yogurt, but any favorite flavor works.

Try:

  • Vanilla yogurt
  • Mixed berry
  • Peach
  • Raspberry
  • Greek yogurt for extra protein

Goldfish Crackers

Every lunch needs a little crunch.

Goldfish crackers are always a favorite because they’re easy to pack and pair perfectly with turkey and cheese.

Other crunchy options include:

  • Pretzels
  • Veggie straws
  • Whole grain crackers
  • Popcorn
  • Cheese crackers

Sweet Treat

A small handful of Reese’s Pieces finishes the lunch with just enough sweetness.

Keeping treats in smaller portions allows the focus to stay on the main meal while still giving kids something fun to look forward to.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you keep tortilla pinwheels from unrolling?

Roll the tortilla tightly and refrigerate it for 15–20 minutes before slicing if you have extra time. This helps the pinwheels hold their shape.

Can I make turkey pinwheels the night before?

Yes! Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator overnight. They’re perfect for meal prep.

What tortillas work best for pinwheels?

Soft flour tortillas, whole wheat wraps, spinach wraps, and gluten-free tortillas all work well as long as they’re fresh and flexible.

What protein can I use besides turkey?

Ham, roast beef, chicken, salami, or even hummus and vegetables make excellent pinwheel fillings.
